Fallen Soldiers Tribute

Art, Music, VideoNo Comments »

The post below came from my Website http://paxvillage.com/ I am thinking about building a new website and wanted to put my blogs here where I started blogging so I would not lose them in a process of changing over and they would still be available for reading.

Tribute to fallen soldiers.

This video was produced by Ben Quick in Hartsville SC. He is also responsible for the production of the Video of “Winter Sun” that was written and performed by Tom Hodge and I wrote about in my last Blog. Ben is also a talented Artist, Sculpture, Photographer, and Wedding Video Producer. He has sold some of his art and prints and is gaining a local reputation for his many talents.

Original Painting by Ben Quick.

Constantly, be only

by Wesley Andrada

to drive the endless dirt road
to solicit kisses as a toad
to grow so slow and old
to be a flame and stone cold.

to constantly pack and never leave
to live a funeral and never grieve
to climb that tall greasy pole
to fly the white flag i loathe.

to feel safe on the front lines
to be jealous of road signs
to only notice what confuses
to be a broken tool with a million uses.

to only see the top on the way down
to need sunglasses to watch brown
to need a ladder to reach the ground
to wear a bandage as a crown.

I find this poem to be Lyrical and Searching

William Hodge

Fortunately Weak

by Wesley Andrade

neath the black slag
of quick dug holes,
lay the abandonded
skulls, that once smiled
cozy, mid-western ideals.
mouse hole heads
bobbing and bouncing
with ernest religion.
a gentle, touching hand.
the soft familar, smiling
eyes of a trusted family member.
who loved me,
but not themselves.
now the years have
have melted their
expoited brain tissue.
i finally love them
cause i finally love me.
but they are just chunks
of flesh, razored to pieces.
empty, walking vessels
of lies and pain.
the total shame
and embarrasment
of waiting
for what will never be
has tailored the cheap
uncomfortable leisure suit,
they persistently wear with
arrogant pride.
their eyes never touch me
warmly anymore.
just cold, socket rocks.
their heads still
bobbing and bouncing
like lifeless dummies.
ignoring the pain
has become the religion itself.
im so fortunate
i was never strong enough
to ignore
that much
pain.

Neil Bates, one of my Circle of Friends on Facebook, posted politically inspired poem by his mother Joanne on my FB page.
Because Healthcare is a passion of mine and I liked the poem, I asked Neil to let me post it on my Blog Site. He was gracious enough to consent.

With Regards to Rudolph

by Joanne Bates

Barack, our first black President,
Figured he was Heaven sent.
Vowed not to follow the norm,
But to pull off Health Care Reform.

Obama, with your brain so bright,
Won’t you lead us in this fight?

On a snowy winter’s night
Flakes were falling fast and light.
Demos snagged the 60th vote,
Now Repubs can’t rock the boat.
But will the abortion concession
Reconcile with House legislation?
A final vote on Christmas Eve
May decide what gifts we’ll receive.

Obama is happy but wary,
Hoping to finish work in January.

We are weary of this drama
But one thing is sure, President Obama.
With Health Care Reform victory
You’ll go down in history.

The Virtue of Self-Righteousness

Philosophy, Poetry, ReligionNo Comments »

I originally posted this on my Hubpages Blog but decided to move some of my work to my new website because I need to add content to make the site functional. I hope you enjoy it again if you have already read it.

Self-righteousness is a feeling of smug moral superiority[1] derived from a sense that one’s beliefs, actions, or affiliations are of greater virtue than those of the average person.

Confident of one’s own righteousness, esp. when smugly moralistic and intolerant of the opinions and behavior of others.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

It is time to change the old standard of self-righteousness. Moral standards are always acted upon from within. While the religious may give allegiance to moral standards created outside of themselves, they always act (in the long term) on the values that they accept internally. Then when They fall short of the external standard they call it sin. They either humbly repent and promise to submit to the will of the external provider of moral values. Or the proclaim “The Devil made me do it “.

All men do not accept the premise that morals and ethics are external absolutes that are handed down by the God of your choice. The very fact that various God concepts and differing moral and ethical declaration have been conceived of demonstrates the subjective value of righteousness. It follows that self-righteousness is the only valid righteousness that the individual can act upon. To act otherwise is to deny self and therefore existence.

I am Self Righteous

I am Self Righteous.
What else could I be?
I have no God
Speaking to me.

I am Self Righteous.
What else could I do?
I depend upon thinking
to know what is true

I am Self Righteousness
What else could I be?
That which is within
Is what defines me.

I am Self Righteous.
What else could I do?
I could not be me
and to self not be true

Sonnet to a Rose

Published for posterity

This Sonnet was written by me for my Wife more than forty one years ago as a kind of wedding gift. We still have the original hand written copy. I first posted it on my blog http://www.lasthandwillie.blogspot.com/ for the sake of posterity. I am publishing it again because I want to move things that have long term importance to my to my own Website I am not a serious Formal Poet so I don’t pretend that it is a Masterpiece. But I am ready to share it with any who might care for no better reason than Romance.

Sonnet to a Rose

Sweet Rose, Symbol of fragrance and beauty
Shed every rainbow hue save lonely blue
Kiss the early morn. Sate your thirst with dew.
Seek the warm rays of the Sun by Dawns Decree.
Share your sweet nector with the bumble bee.
when there he comes to seek his fill of you.
The life he brings will make you live anew With that life do lovers do their duty.
For with this rose, the symbol of my love
I offer wrapped in dreams of my desire.
To one who fills the depth of soul in me.
With touch of its soft petals,I conspire
To win her Heart and all her Love acquire.
Sweet sweet Rose…symbol of this lovers plea.

This short piece was not written by me and I never learned the name of the author. But I liked it enough

to include it.

To me, you are a delicate Rose
Whose beauty never dies
When pressed between the pages
Of a good book;
Or caught between the pages
Of my mind.

Knowledge becomes Spirtual

This is the story of a young Shaman appretice. Its purpose is to develop the connection between the acquisition of knowledge through observation and the incorporation of knowledge into religious ritual. It is about process and not proof. It represents neither Modern Science or any Established Ritual, but is rather the path from past to present.

The Quest for a Vision

I have served at the feet of our Shaman “Keeper of time” since the sixth year of my life.
This is the sixth year of my service to him and the time of my naming is at hand. There
is a slight chill in the air as I stand before the Keeper of the Children of Night. He rest above the horizon and guides their path across the sky as they flee the coming of the Sun, child of the Creator and Ruler of the Day. The Shaman told me a story about Star of the north who alone stays at rest while all others race across the sky and change their path with the changing of seasons. If you travel a path to seek his home, he will rise ever higher in the sky until he stands overhead and all else will dance in a circle around him.

The larger wandering light of the night called Lunar, who changes faces every thirty passages of the Sun, has changed his face three times since the Sun ruled the longest day. If I face the ruling North Star at the coming of Dawn and raise my arms to form a cross, I will point to the rising of the Sun in the east and the setting of the Sun in the west. When the Sun rules the longest day, it rises more to north. When the Sun rules the shortest day, it rises more to south. Only when the forces of Night and Day are equal does it rise due east.

As the Sun has lost its power to the forces of night, The fruits of the sun have come to maturity. The grain that grows in the valley are being harvested and stored for winter. The Sun and the North Star have marked the time to move with the herds to better pastures to the south away from the coming cold from the north. I have learned from “Keeper of Time” that the Sun and stars and Lunar will mark the passage of seasons and tell us what is yet to come.

Now we travel to the south with the dying power of the Sun, There will be a gathering of Shaman of all the tribes to form the circle of dance to seek knowledge of the spirits by consuming the hidden fruit. This is the year of my passing into manhood and the Shaman I serve will seek of the spirit a naming for his apprentice. If I receive my naming I will be open to more knowledge about the healing herbs and the seeing of knowledge from a new consciousness of the Great Spirit. But that is yet another story and another level of learning.

Cycle Of Life

I first published this poem on Hubpages. I am trying to bring some of the things I wrote earlier to my own Web Sight . This is one of those things that I wanted to bring home. I hope you will enjoy it

Cycle of Life
I have loved as much as any man.

I have loved my own life

I have loved Socrates and Zen.

I have loved you my wife.

We shared our bed in pleasure

We have shared it with style

We have shared our bed with purpose

We shared to make a child.

What can I give this child to treasure

My greatest treasure is loving you.

If it has brought me great pleasure

This too my child shall do.

These are the things that most of my Friends and I believe.
1. Human Society form “Interdependent” communities in which no member is greater than the whole, nor independent from things that affect it.
2.Every member of the community must contribute to the well being of the community, even if the community has to create a pathway for the individual to contribute.
3. The community owes every citizen a way to earn food, clothing, shelter, education, and Health Care. The method of providing must be tailored to the ability of the individuals without using moral judgments of their worth to society.
4. The community must be aware that a limited number of individuals will not be capable of contributing as much as they consume, but that the intrinsic value of life is enough to sustain their right to existence.
5. Every individual must be given greater reward for greater contribution to the total assets of the community, but the reward must not be so great that it creates an instability in providing for the needs of the whole.

This is where I stand. This is why I spend so many hours writing about the things I value. I have no problem with those who disagree as long as you are not Disagreeable.
Pax Village is my intellectual home and you are welcome here. Argue against my concepts with logic, but do not demagogue in my home or you will not be welcome here.

Tides

Bad Poems from my Youth
So far I’ve posted two poems since I started on Bloggin One was a Sonnet that I had written as a gift for my new bride more than 40 years ago. It wasn’t all that creatively good but the structure, timing, and rhyme pattern was Shakespearean correct. Beside, It was romantic and my wife said she liked it at the time.
The other one, “Poetry: Rushing to the Sea”, was actually quite good. I was overcome with enthusiasm. I thought, all I have to do is go through my old poems from my college days and I have a bunch of hubpages. Wrong! Oh so very wrong. All I had was a folder of yellow pages.
Out of all that left over labor from my misguided youth I found only one stanza in a five stanza poem titled “Tides” that had any merit.
Not being a wasteful person I decided to write a new poem around what was left of the old one

THE NEW TIDE

Ruled by force from far away
Waves conquer land by night and day
The sound of battle begins to roar
The surge of water comes to shore

Many Things pull it apart
Subdue its current, Erase its start
Slowly return from whence it came
To build its strength to come again.

In and out through endless time
In and out with endless rhyme
Is this the force that lives in me

Atheist Have Moral Values

I have often used Postings and Comments and on my Facebook Page to feature in my Blog. This is one of those times. I do some editing by not using full names and trying to edit the spelling and some structure but it is faithful to the content of the original discussion.

This Blog is based on a posting on my Page by a Friend(Louis) who is Conservative and Christian. He is interested in discussing why all Atheist are not practice hedonism. He believes that they are all pleasure seekers and cannot really believe they have commitments to the value of their fellowmen.

LET US BEGIN

Louis I've given your many thoughts and beliefs some serious thought. Now I am more confused then ever.

If you are atheist then why do you care about the community so much? Wouldn't survival of the fittest be a better way to go?

Melvin
Louis my sentiments exactly! I have made this argument with atheist many times. I often correlate Hitler's belief structure in line with atheistic beliefs as a matter of fact.

Why care about life if it has no purpose or inerant value to it?
The problem is in your point of view. You find value in life to come. My only value has to be in this life. I find value in Life Itself. The Human Community is my Family. Accumulating wealth at the expense of Family would be self degradation. Christians make the mistake of thinking that being atheist is a license to be Evil.
Hitler was in fact not an Atheist. Neither were those who conducted the Inquisition. Neither were Crusaders who killed men, women and Children. Evil lies in Intent, not in Belief. Many of my nearly 4000 friends in my Circle are Atheist or Agnostic or spiritual nonbelievers. Almost to the person they find value in Human life and believe in a social safety network that protects the intrinsic value of each human life.
Religious people all to often have the attitude that "If you refuse to accept what we believe we have a right to persecute you in the name of our God." Being Christian does not always lead to Love of your Fellow man. Being atheist almost always does in a Democratic Society.
What give this life value? Why is that value different for animals, bugs, plants and all other living things?

What makes man different?

William Hodge
I am Man. I also value the life of other animals, bugs, plants and all other living things. I value the whole living life organism. But I also understand the food chain and the fact that the energy for all life comes from the Sun (Son of God) through the plant to the grazer to the predator. There is a complex living process that we are a functioning part of.

My immediate value is to the individuals that make up the community of man. But my total value lies in the dynamic life organism and my responsibility to the interdependent environment that supports this living system.

You view life as system of independent entities competing with each other for survival. You reject evolution as a Christian Creationist, but embrace it as a Social System for men to live by. You present yourself as free and independent of responsibility for the community, even though you are interdependent with every every other member in the community.

In the end, "We are all in the same boat". The question is, do you choose to throw some out of the boat because you do not find them useful and wish to be rid of the burden.
So lets talk food chain. Is man at the top? What if a tiger ate your wife? Would you write that off as just part of the food chain? Would you want it killed in retaliation or to protect others?
Reasoning, you seem to have the ability to reason your way through things. Why is man the only creature who can do this?
It would take more than one Tiger to eat my wife.
But that is really not the point. The ecological system that supports life is interdependent. The idea of a top predator is a mental concept to illustrate a directional process. In fact, the process is not directional.

When a predator dies he is eaten by the worms and bacteria at the supposed bottom of the chain. Sometimes he gets eaten by the worms and bacteria before he dies. Sometimes he is eaten by vultures. The life system is interdependent and dynamic. The process is affected by evolving conditions.

You are trying to apply a moral concept to a natural process. Morality is an artificial concept by man to define the effect our behavior has on our fellowman. It is not an Absolute. It is relative to the moral values and traditions of the community.

I suspect you are trying to maneuver me into saying man is special because god made him so. The truth is man is special because he has evolved more efficient survival behavior and skills than other predators. He is the most successful life form because he has so defined himself and there are no apparent challengers to his self assertion. At least not yet. As long as I am a member of the community of man I will strive to advance that assessment. I honor the intrinsic value of all men because I choose to do so.
Tough wife? Good thing I'm not on her Facebook friends list.

Choice, there you have it. You get to choose and you can reason through your choices. You honestly think you evolved from some animal that could not reason like a monkey or ape?
Why haven't more creatures evolved in to thinking, reasoning beings? Why only man?
Man is not the only one. You should do your research Louis. Their is strong evidence that both the the Chimpanzee and the Bonobo have the ability to both reason and be creative. They have rudimentary language and the ability to recognize symbols. Even the Ocean Mammals appear to have intelligence that may be superior to ours and they live in cooperative societies and varying culture from pod to pod. The development connection across species lines is irrefutable in both observation and DNA Science ( In fact - in every Scientific Discipline).

You simply refuse to accept the validity of Science if it causes you to question your origin. I can do nothing to convince you if fear trumps truth and reason in your though process so I will not try. It is just a pity that someone of your intellect would choose slavery over freedom.

There is enough in life that compels us, without surrendering our ability to reason. The Quest for Knowledge is the pinnacle of man's achievement. If you abandon it because you prefer the comfort of the Lie of the Absolute, you abandon the power to be Human.
I did my research last night William and I am here to report my findings. Now you have explained everything away with your science so I'm not so sure your going to believe anything I tell you about my findings, but here it goes any way.

I watched the evening news. MSNBC, yes. Not that dreaded FOX you so despise. For one hour I watched as people got into car wrecks, robbed banks, raped, went to war, came home from war, had children, discussed money, spoke about global warming and complained about too much snow and cold, and fought about politics. There was one story about some dolphins. It had to do with people nursing them back to health so that they could return to the sea.

What struck me as odd was that there were no dolphins, Chimpanzees, bonobos, or any such creature in all the news making decisions about doing the right or wrong thing. Its the damnedest thing! Everyone of the news stories was about people making decisions between good and bad, right and wrong, love and hate.

Tell me again how closely related to a monkey we
One last thought... It was MSNBC and they were all monkeys dressed in suites opinionating on the news.
Watching news is not Research. If you wish to start simple just use Google or Bing and then expand to Scientific Research on the subject. You are trying to be cute. I know you are not that Dumb.

I will offer this quote by a famous Atheist to comment on your original question: “An atheist believes that deed must be done instead of prayer said. An atheist strives for involvement in life and not escape into death. He wants disease conquered, poverty vanished, war eliminated.” - Madalyn Murray O'Hair.

If one believes this is his only life and sees self-gratification as meaningless, then he accepts life itself as the Prime Value and all other value is predicated on that. To spend life preparing for your reward after Death is to pursue an illusion.
Yes I was being cute, but serious at the same time. You don't know any reasoning dolphins that are crack smoking bank robbers do you? Your atheist quests are all noble, but so long as man has the ability to reason, make choices and choose between serving himself, the community and/or God you will never get there.

Is your way the right way? It probably is if it is a choice. Will it ever come to fruition? Not possible here on earth. Will you ever be able to get all members of the community to agree and pursue your utopian society? Highly unlikely. Why? Because God gave us a choice to decide for ourselves how we want to server the community. No matter how much you want heaven on earth you won't get it until you pass on from this life.
You are on the right path with your care and concern for the community. However, your two flaws are you act like a God in your persistence in controlling people and yet you don't believe in him.
Louis, I cannot act like God because there is no God. The notion of Absolute Perfection is an illusion. You might as well claim that I want to act like Zeus, or Horus or Quetzalcoatl. You could pretend that I was seeking the enlightenment of a Buddha.

The truth is, I do not seek perfection. I seek choices that improve the Human condition. Others may make choices that are different because their chosen values are different. There are no absolutes - Only probabilities determined by by observation and application of Scientific Methodology.

I act according to the best truth I can arrive at. If you are trying to claim you know Absolute Truth because God has revealed it to you, I would have to be less than amused by that absurd notion. If you are afraid of what you do not know, and prefer to believe in the Mystery Knowledge of a beneficent Slave owning God, then you have my Pity. There is little else I can offer someone who has choosen Slavery over Freedom.
I still don't get your value system. If this is the only life you have why not just go gang busters with hot women, rich food, fine wine or live and let live. What do you care if the next guy decides to serve himself and not the community?

I have no claim on absolute truth. No one does. What I have is faith, blind as it my be. My faith tells me I
might be wrong and probably am about most everything. It doesn't dictate that I force it on you or persecute you and it promotes many of the same ideals that you have professed a strong belief in living.  The only difference is you are chasing truth here on earth and I have faith that I will find it after.
You are an intelligent man, Louis, But I admit you confuse me. You say you are a Christian and a Creationist. But it is obvious that you are not a Fundamentalist. Either that or you have never really studied the Bible and your belief is in Ritual and not Dogma.

You have hope in life after death with no knowledge of the price you must pay to receive it. The Tragedy is that it doesn't exist. A literal translation of the Bible has no validity. It is Mythology that was created by the earliest civilizations to personify the teaching of early Astronomy, Pharmacology. and animal and plant fertility knowledge man learned through observation.

It developed into the practice of Astrology, Drug rituals, and fertility rituals in Religious Dogma. All subsequent religion is derived from this mythology. When the Protestant Reformation separated the Bible from the Priesthood that protected its interpretation, the literal interpretation created an aberration of meaning that is totally absurd.

One does not have to be a genius to figure that out. A rudimentary understanding of Science made that clear to me by the time I was 16. All of the study I've done in the intervening years has only verified my conclusion. You appear to live by slogans and not conviction.

I am genetically motivated to survive for as long as I can,but I am who I am partly by Choice. Self gratification was and is part of my life but it lacks a sense purpose. The Human Family will live much longer than me and does have value and my interest. The older I get the greater the urge to act with purpose to continue the development of both the Human Family and the whole organism of life. I have no reason to believe in a god and no motivation to accept Slavery to Dogma created by others. I value my interdependency with and responsibility to the Human Community and the Ecology System of the Whole Earth.

Science Created Religion 101

In the Beginning

In addition to his being willing to eat anything he could get into his mouth, the survival of man was aided by his ability to take what his senses perceived and store it as symbols that his mind conceived. An apple had a visual impact. It could also be smelt and felt and tasted and all of these externally perceived qualities could be combined into a mental conception and labeled with a word symbol. That produced a unified set of descriptive qualities.

"Genesis 2: 19 - 20 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called ever living creature, that was the name there of; And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field.........."

In the beginning Men collected information about the objective reality through perception and internalized it as a conception with a label and expressed it as a sound. Sound labels were externalized and agreed upon as objective realities of the perceptions that they identified. Language was born. Everyone who learned the spoken word knew what an Apple was.  Conception begat communication which begat community which begat personified knowledge. Labels of sound acquired power to create internal concepts and Religion was born.

"Genesis 1:1 ......God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:3 Then God SAID, "Let their be Light."
Genesis 1:6 Then God SAID, "Let there be an expanse."
Genesis 1:9 Then God SAID, "Let the waters...be gathered"
Genesis 1:11 Then God SAID, "Let the earth sprout vegetation"

Creation by sound proceeded from Jewish mythology to Christian Mythology:

"Gospel of John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
1:2 He was in the beginning with God.
1:3 All things came into being through Him; and apart from Him nothing came into being.
1:4 In Him was life and the life was the light of men".

Most Fundamentalist Christians refer to the Bible as the Word of God. In Fact the Christ was the
Word of God (The Creator) and the Bible is about him. The Bible is not in itself Holy.

Today we use the word Amen (Hebrew) in prayer because it signifies Creation of Truth. It is used to mean,"So be it." It is derived from the Egyptian  Amon, also spelled Amun, Amen, or Ammon, a deity who was revered as king of the gods.

In Hindu mantra chants it is the sound Ahmmmm that is the sound of creation. When Jesus uses the words Verily, Verily it has the same root. That is why the Christ Mythology refers to him as "The Way, The Truth, and the Light". It is derived from the concept of the SUN (Son) God. The Christ Myth has  the Concept becoming Manifest in Perception creating Reality.  Science works in the opposite direction,  Perception is manifest in the form of Concept in the mind. Religion accepts the Concept as absolute unchanging truth and resist the nature of perception to change the view of knowledge.

In some cultures, the Serpent is the Hero in the Garden of Eden story. He taught man that knowledge is to be sought. God wanted knowledge to be accepted by man as dictated to him by Religious Dogma or Mythology.

Give me Freedom or Give me Money

Freedom is a strong word and a condition to be desired. Patrick Henry said it with ultimate emotion when he said "Give me Liberty or give me Death". The problem is not in the strength of the emotion, but in the content of its character.

The Beloved Comedian Jack Benny had a great story about being confronted with a mugger who said, "Your money or your life." After a long pause the mugger said "Well?" Benny replied , "I'm thinking, I'm thinking!!". You will know freedom when you can define your needs or desires and have a means of achieving them.

The battle cry for Libertarianism is small government, low taxes, and maximum personal liberty. That is also the battle cry of Right Wing Republicans and helps explain the Libertarian alliance with Anarcho Capitalism. Then when you throw in the Right Wing Christians who are needed to furnish the votes necessary to win elections, you have the problem of a strong group that want Government Power to legislate morality and turn us into a Christian Theocracy. That gets in the way of the personal liberty that pure Libertarians want.

The problem is in how one defines personal liberty. What is the content of its character? Do you want freedom from ...or... freedom to... or both. Are you a Capitalist Libertarian or a Social Libertarian.

Capital Liberty is about:
1. Right to life
2. Right to property
3. Freedom of Speech
4. Equality before the Law.
5. No restriction on adult behavior that is not harmful.

Social Liberty is about.
1. Right to cultural identity.
2. Right to gainful employment
3. Right to food, clothing, and shelter
4. Right to education.

The first group of standards is about freedom from interference with the ownership of property and impositions on personal liberty. The second group of standards is about entitlement to community service from the Commonwealth and recognition of individual values.

The first group is supportive of unrestricted Capitalism . The second group prefers a social network to support personal survivial within the community. Both groups claim to support Representative Democracy as the solution to achieve their aims.

In most of the standards of Freedom or Liberty they are in agreement. One of the main areas of disagreement is in unrestricted Capitalism which history has shown often leads to unproductive Greed and authoritarianism . The other is that entitlement to share the commonwealth can lead to high taxes, big government, and sub level productivity.

If both groups remain true to their commitment to democracy as a form of government, America will continue to find creative ways to encourage both efficient competition and to insure individual survivial  above grinding Poverty.  If we continue on our current path of confrontation and misinformation, we risk a loss of freedom and the triumph of Special Interest in the form of Extremism and possible Dictatorship.

We must decide if we want to live with freedom and Liberty or be ruled by the pursuit of wealth and Power. We must decide the future of America and do it now.

William Hodge
